Surface wind over Europe: Data and variability

This work improves the characterization and knowledge of surface wind climatology over Europe with development an observational database unprecedented quality control (QC), European Surface Wind Observational (EuSWiO). EuSWiO includes more than 3,829 stations sub-daily resolution for speed direction, a number sites spanning period 1880–2017, few hundred time series starting in 1930s relatively good spatial coverage since 1970s. The creation entails merging eight different data sets its submission to common QC. About 5% total observations were flagged, correcting great part extreme unrealistic values, which have discernible impact on statistics database. daily variability was characterized by means classification technique, identifying 11 independent subregions distinct temporal 2000–2015 period. Significant decreases during this are found five regions, whereas two regions show increases. Most allow extending analysis earlier decades. Caution interpreting long-term trends is needed as not been homogenized. Nevertheless, 1980s can be noticed most regions. contributes deeper understanding Europe. It will from meteorological climate change studies, including potential applications analyses events, power assessments or evaluation reanalysis model-data comparison exercises at continental scales.
